Siarter Iaith at Ysgol John Bright: Celebrating Our Welsh Identity Together
Ysgol John Bright is proud to be on a dynamic and purposeful journey to strengthen the Welsh language and embed Cymreictod at the heart of school life. As we work towards achieving the Bronze Siarter Iaith Award, with clear ambitions to progress to Silver and Gold, our commitment to bilingualism has never been stronger.
Led by Bilingualism Coordinator, Miss Laura Parkinson, and supported by the enthusiasm of our dedicated Criw Cymraeg, the whole school community has embraced the challenge of promoting Welsh language and culture. Staff across all departments have contributed with passion and creativity, ensuring that Welsh is celebrated, visible, and valued every day at YJB.
A Year of Welsh Culture, Celebration, and Community
This academic year has been filled with vibrant opportunities for learners to experience and enjoy Welsh language and heritage. Through a rich programme of activities, themed days, and competitions, we have encouraged pupils to use Welsh naturally, confidently, and proudly.
Our celebrations have included:
- Dydd Santes Dwynwen — exploring Wales’ patron saint of love through creative tasks, messages of kindness, and cultural storytelling.
- Dydd Miwsig Cymru — a lively celebration of Welsh music, where pupils discovered new artists, shared playlists, and took part in music‑themed competitions.
- Owain Glyndŵr Day — learning about Wales’ national hero through history challenges, quizzes, and creative responses.
- Dydd Gŵyl Dewi — a whole‑school celebration of Welsh identity, featuring cultural activities, artwork, and opportunities for pupils to showcase their pride in Wales.
- Shwmae Su’mae Day — encouraging everyone to start conversations in Welsh and use the language in a friendly, informal way.
These events have been supported by cross‑curricular competitions, tutor‑time challenges, and pupil‑led initiatives from the Criw Cymraeg, all designed to make Welsh language use fun, meaningful, and accessible for all learners.
Investing in Staff: Building Confidence and Bilingual Capacity
A key part of our Siarter Iaith journey has been strengthening staff confidence in using Welsh. This year, numerous members of staff have attended a two‑week residential course at Nant Gwrtheyrn, fully funded through external grants, to deepen their Welsh language skills and develop their confidence in using Cymraeg both in and beyond the classroom. Alongside this, staff have also taken part in weekly Welsh lessons, ensuring continuous progress and a growing bilingual capacity across departments.
This investment has had a noticeable impact across the school. Welsh is now heard more frequently in corridors, classrooms, receptions, and communal spaces. Staff are modelling everyday Welsh phrases, using bilingual signage, and embedding Welsh naturally into lessons and interactions. The increased visibility and use of Cymraeg has created a warm, inclusive bilingual atmosphere that extends beyond the school gates and into the wider community.
Looking Ahead to Our July Eisteddfod
One of the most anticipated moments of our Siarter Iaith journey is our upcoming school Eisteddfod in July. This vibrant celebration will bring together pupils from across Years 7 and 8 to perform, compete, and express their creativity through:
- Singing and instrumental performances
- Welsh recitation
- Drama and sketches with a Welsh twist
- Disco dancing
- A wide range of off‑stage competitions led by departments across the school
The Eisteddfod promises to be a highlight of the year — a showcase of talent, pride, and Cymreictod that reflects the spirit of our school community.
Looking Forward
Our Siarter Iaith journey is one of growth, collaboration, and shared purpose. As we continue to strengthen our bilingual provision, we remain committed to:
- Expanding opportunities for pupils to use Welsh in authentic, everyday contexts
- Supporting staff through ongoing training and professional development
- Deepening our cultural celebrations and community engagement
- Working collectively towards achieving Bronze, Silver, and ultimately Gold Siarter Iaith status
At Ysgol John Bright, we believe that the Welsh language is not just a subject — it is a living part of our identity. We look forward to continuing this journey together.
