Friends of YJB Perform Awarded Prestigious Grant from Gwynt Y Mor Offshore Windfarm and RWE Llandudno, July 2024

Friends of YJB Perform, a dedicated parental support group committed to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences at Ysgol John Bright, is thrilled to announce that they have been awarded a significant grant from the Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm Fund, managed by Conwy Voluntary Services Council (CVSC), and RWE.
The grant will provide crucial funding for the continuation and expansion of the school’s annual musical productions, which have been a hallmark of the community for the past thirteen years. These productions, held at Venue Cymru, offer students unparalleled opportunities for artistic expression, personal growth, and community engagement.

“This grant is a game-changer for us,” said Ffion Cook, Chair of Friends of YJB Perform. “It ensures that we can continue to provide high-quality theatrical experiences for our students and the wider community. We are incredibly grateful to the Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm Fund and RWE for their generous support.”

The funding will be used to cover various production costs, including stage set construction, costumes, professional artistic collaborations, and technical equipment. By securing this grant, Friends of YJB Perform can ensure that the productions remain inclusive, allowing more students to participate and benefit from these enriching experiences.

“Performing at Venue Cymru gives our students a unique opportunity to experience the professional world of theatre,” said Mr Hywel Parry, headteacher of Ysgol John Bright. “Thanks to the support of the newly formed ‘Friends of YJB Perform’ and their successful application to Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm Fund and RWE, we can continue to provide these transformative opportunities that greatly enhance our students' educational journey.”

“A grant like this means that the school can continue to provide opportunities for ALL children, regardless of their circumstances,” said parent Jo Fino. Many extra-curricular activities create an extra financial burden on families, therefore the school strive to alleviate this by providing rich cultural experiences without any cost to them. In the current economic climate, with a reduction in funding from the local authority, this can prove challenging for schools, therefore we are very pleased that we can help and support Ysgol John Bright in any way possible.

The grant also underscores the value of community partnerships and the role of local organisations in supporting educational initiatives. Friends of YJB Perform looks forward to continuing their collaboration with Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm Fund, RWE, and other community stakeholders to further the cultural and educational mission of Ysgol John Bright.

Results Celebrations at Ysgol John Bright

In a year when results nationally should be going down, Ysgol John Bright students bucked the trend with outstanding results this year. Over half of our year 13 gained at least one A*/A grade with a phenomenal 15% of our large year 13 cohort gaining at least three A* or A grades.

As a year group these students embody our vision of being a community of learning; they have worked together not only to achieve these brilliant results but to fundraise for local charities, influence the life and work of the school community and support other students across the year groups.

Headteacher Hywel Parry commented “We believe Ysgol John Bright is a place to find your future and that is certainly the case for these amazing students receiving their results today including 90% of our university applicants who have gained their first choice university place. We are so proud that the students’ hard work and the dedication of our staff has paid off.”

Notable successes include Daniel Mitchell, one of our student presidents with 3A*2A and will study Biochemistry at the University of Manchester. Jess Sutton with 4A* is now taking a gap year. Not to be out-done by Dan our other student president Kyria Houghton gained 3A*1A will read Theatre and Performance at Warwick, with Mohammed MIrza also with 3A* 1A going on to study Medicine in Cardiff.

Whilst Year 12 are busy on their Work Experience placements we have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the Year 11 applicants who hope to join the Sixth Form in September. Over three taster days the Year 11 students have been able to experience lessons in the subjects they are considering, talks from a host of high profile guests and time in the Sixth Form Centre itself.

Students have had talks on: study skills from Edge Hill University; on the benefits of going to University and how to choose a course from Bangor University; on the benefits of Higher Level Apprenticeships from Huw Davies at the BBC; on Race, Identity and Equality from ex YJB author Professor Charlotte Williams (OBE); on Overcoming Challenges and Realising Potential by ex YJB student and National Champion weightlifter Bethan Roberts; on pathways into healthcare professions by ex YJB student, now Senior BCHB Behavioural Nurse and Bangor University lecturer, Georgie Coxon and Karen Tilby from Wrexham University, and finally a bit of manic fun with a scavenger hunt across Llandudno.

Many thanks to all of the guests who contributed, particularly our amazing YJB alumni
