Performing in our annual school show at Ysgol John Bright has always been one of the most exciting parts of my year. Every February and March, there’s a tangible energy around school as students come together to bring a production to life. It’s not just about the performance on stage—it’s about everyone involved. From the backstage crew moving sets, handling microphones, and controlling lighting and sound, to Bryn, our dependable Deputy Stage Manager who ensures we all know where we need to be, the success of the show is truly a team effort.

Over the past three years, I’ve had the chance to grow both on stage and off by taking on different roles. I made my debut as Lurch in The Addams Family, a role that introduced me to the world of performing arts in a way I’ll never forget. Wearing stilts to become Lurch was a unique challenge, and the fun of delivering comedy scenes and a solo number really set the tone for my journey. Last year, playing Fred Casely in Chicago allowed me to explore a more subtle side of acting, and now I’m embracing the blend of acting and singing as Warner in Legally Blonde. Every character has pushed me to overcome nerves and learn new skills, all while enjoying the process.

What makes our show even more special is the venue. Performing at Venue Cymru, a professional national theatre, is an opportunity that few schools get, and it adds an extra layer of excitement and pride to the experience. The whole process—learning scripts, mastering songs, and simply finding the courage to perform—teaches us that with time and effort, even the scariest challenges become natural.

Beyond the stage, the show is a place where students from all areas of the school come together. It’s a welcoming environment that builds friendships, strengthens bonds, and offers younger students a first look at balancing fun and hard work. Every student, whether in a small role or a lead, puts in an incredible amount of effort to make their character truly their own, adding a personal touch that brings the production to life. This dedication is matched by our teachers, who invest hundreds of hours after school and during show week organising logistics, supporting rehearsals, and ensuring every detail is perfect. Their commitment creates an environment where both creativity and teamwork thrive.

I truly wouldn’t trade these experiences for anything. Whether you’re interested in taking part or simply want to witness the energy and talent on stage, our school show is an event that encapsulates what makes our community so unique.
