Meet the YJB Music department staff…

Miss S W Rees, Head of Music
BMus Hons, PGCE
Originally from Aberystwyth, Miss Rees studied music at the University of Wales, Bangor. Her major studies included a piano recital and the study of harmony throughout the ages.

She plays a number of instruments including the piano, the harp and the clarinet, enjoys singing and leading choirs, but is most at home accompanying various soloists.

Mr Hywel Parry, Music Teacher
B.Mus (Hons), PGCE
Mr Parry is originally from Holywell in Flintshire. He studied music at the University of Wales, Bangor where he was awarded a concerto prize and the Performance prize. Upon graduating Mr Parry embarked on a career as an instrumental tutor and freelance musician.

Performances have included tours to the USA and Holland with the British Clarinet Ensemble as well as such prestigeous venues as the Royal Albert Hall, Wales Milennium Centre and Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. As a member of ‘Meinir Gwillm a’r Band’ Mr Parry has performed at all the main festivals in Wales. A former National Co-ordinator of ‘Revelation Rock-Gospel Choirs’, Mr Parry became a classroom teacher in 2007 , and continues to perform regularly as a soloist and accompanist including work on TV and radio.

Mr Hadyn Smith, Guitar Teacher
Certificate of Education. Author of “Contemporary Acoustic Guitar” commissioned for use in teaching the blind.

Worked in Theatre in Education, concerts, shows, radio, TV, and recorded “Three Chains of Gold” with the group ‘Mint Julep’. Worked at the Cavern (Liverpool) in the 1960’s with the blues group ‘Shackles’.

guitarMr Paul Roberts, Bass Guitar Teacher
Born and bred in Wrexham. Studied music at Leeds University and Birmingham Polytechnic. Since returning to North Wales he has played professionally in Britain and abroad, on the cello, double bass and bass guitar.

His reputation as a jazz musician is now gaining international recognition.



woodwindMiss Rebecca Bateson, Woodwind Teacher
Gained BA and MMus from UCNW Bangor.

Experienced teacher of woodwind, particularly clarinet, at both primary and secondary levels. Regularly conducts the North Wales Clarinet Choir.



stringsMr Robbie Leyshon, String Teacher
Trained at Chethams School of Music and the Guildhall School of Music, London. Main performance instrument is the viola. After college played with the Halle Orchestra, Manchester, and has since played with various professional orchestras. Has taught in London, Manchester, Salford and, for the last eleven years, in North Wales.
