As of September 2010, Year 7 students will be following an innovative Expressive Arts curriculum comprised of Music, Art and Drama. Lessons will be based around a number of theme based projects with special performances and displays of students’ work at the end of each term.
In years 8 & 9, students will look to develop their musical skills even further in the areas of Performing, Composing and Appraising. They will use keyboards, guitars, drums and classroom percussion on a regular basis as well as the Garageband and Sibelius computer software we have on our Apple Mac computers.
Students in Year 10 & 11 opt to take Music at GCSE level and follow the WJEC’s specification. This course allows students to build on their existing skills base in the three following areas of study:
- Performing – In the spring term of Year 11, students will perform one piece as a soloist and one piece as a member of an ensemble under exam conditions
- Composing – Using either the Garageband or Sibelius computer software, students will create two contrasting compositions
- Appraising – Students will study the following four areas of study in detail: Musical Form, Music in Wales, Music Evolution and Music for Stage and Screen
Extracurricular Activities & Instrumental Tuition
The Music Department offers an extensive programme of extracurricular activities such as Bel Canto (SATB Choir), A’Capella (SSA Choir), Jazz Band and Show Choir all of which perform at the annual Carol Service and Summer Concert and feed into the extremely popular school musical which is performed at Venue Cymru in the spring term. We also work closely with the Conwy County Music Service to provide additional instrumental and vocal tuition.
