YJB Library Celebrates 80 Years of the Carnegie Medal

At lunch-time yesterday YJB Library held a party in honour of 80 years of the CILIP Carnegie Medal, the most important yearly award for children’s books.

Each year the ‘Mad About Books’ Reading Club at YJB shadows the awards, reading the shortlisted books, voting on their favourites, and adding photos and reviews to the Carnegie website. Today the Reading Group were able to watch the Award Ceremony live in London, as the winner was announced, and listen to the winning author give her speech. Everyone in the Library at lunch-time celebrated with a special Carnegie cake and chocolates with mini book covers. Joining in the fun was Anne Thomas from Llandudno Public Library, Martin Daws, performance poet, Tracey Rees-Cook from the English Department and Jane Pethig, Assistant Head.

Prizes were awarded to three students who had made a special effort to read many of the shortlisted books, and who had added their own book reviews to the website. They were: Jadene West, Evie Herschman and Abi Thomas.

Everyone enjoyed the party and we are all looking forward to next year, when Anne Thomas is to be one of the judges!
