A group of YJB students were invited by Llandudno Public Library to read the three English language books for the Tir na n-Og award (an award given each year to the best children’s book set in Wales, or by a Welsh author). Seven students from year 7 volunteered to read the books and met in the YJB Library to discuss them with the Librarian. All really enjoyed the task and despite the very different genres, each book was enjoyed and all found it hard to choose a winner.
On Thursday 11th May, the students were invited to the Award Ceremony, this year held at Llandudno Public Library. There they were able to meet the winning author of ‘Sweet Pizza’, Giancarlo Gemin, and they quizzed him about the background to the book, how he came up with the ideas and were even persuaded to listen to some Italian opera!
After refreshments, the prize-giving took place to much applause and the students had the opportunity to have their photos taken with Giancarlo Gemin. The Library staff, the Chief Executive of the Welsh Books Council, the Award organisers and G.R. Gemin himself all praised the students for their excellent behaviour and intelligent questions. They were a credit to the school.
Year 7 students involved were:
Ruby, Evie, Daniel, Theo, Isaac (Jamie and Jane were also in the group reading the shortlisted books but were unable to attend the ceremony due to other commitments)
